Dear Representative/Senator and Gubernatorial Candidates,

I refuse to accept Oregon being 50th out of 50 states in reading proficiency, and I want to see state leaders take responsibility for our children.

Research shows almost any child is capable of learning to read, given the right instruction and support. Many other states, such as Mississippi, have done the hard work of moving their Departments of Education from compliance-based to outcomes-driven. Oregon, on the other hand, continues to prioritize “local control” to the detriment of our children.

Oregon’s Secretary of State, in their 2022 Risk Assessment of K-12, laid out what needs to be done. It’s now 2026, and Oregon continues to waste time and money because state leaders are unwilling to learn from other states.

To begin with, I’d like to know:

Do you believe all K-3 teachers and administrators should be adequately trained to teach reading?

Do you believe all teacher candidates in Oregon should pass a reading licensure exam to show they're ready to teach students how to read?

Do you believe students who struggle the most with reading should receive high-dosage tutoring during the school day?

Do you believe Oregon should accurately count our students in poverty to make sure they get the resources they deserve?

If you’re not familiar with what Oregon could be doing to ensure our education system provides all kids and teachers with what they deserve, I highly recommend Pencil4Gov.com.

Sincerely,

Your Name, Location, and relationship to education if applicable (parent, teacher, student, etc.)
